Traces and places
My work revolves around memories of places and buildings I visit and then I retrace; relive images and feelings of these spaces. With these images and ideas I then create my own narrative and essence in painting and print, removing superfluous detail.
Sources of inspiration appear from heritage sites such as Wightwick Manor, Ditherington Flax Mill, and Venice; at other times it can be from reflections on glass buildings in the centre of Birmingham city centre, and elements of nature in the Welsh countryside.
Some spaces at first glance appear ‘abandoned’, however, on closer inspection they resonate with a quiet energy and a  sense of waiting to be rediscovered and spring into life again. Scratching beneath the surface reveals more – however, these are fragile environments – alter them too much and their equilibrium shifts. Often they are places that we pass every day and their presence becomes etched into our subconciousness.
Colour is important in the role of my work and choose a subdued palette and a reductive aesthetic,  however, occaisionally I will juxtapose these with resonating colours to alter the mood of the work. Further I have  an interest in printing onto such diverse materials such as: aluminium; Mylar; Japanese and Chinese paper; used on their own as hangings or incorporated into paintings.
At present my work is in exhibition in the Roman Gallery, Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery and in 2014 I was shortlisted for the neo:print Prize at the neo:gallery in Bolton which was selected by:
Gordon Cheung (Artist, Printmaker)
Paul Coldwell (Artist & Professor in Fine Art, University of the Arts London)
David Cleaton- Roberts (Co-Director Alan Cristea Gallery)
Eileen Cooper RA (Painter, Printmaker, Keeper of the Royal Academy)
